It's not often that I get to go to tea parties to prepare love potions, but today was an exception. My friend Teresa Jaynes had a reading for her most recent book, The Last Favour, at The Rosenbach Museum this afternoon and a high tea was the back drop of the book's theme: 19th century (mostly English) musings on how a young man should woo a young woman.
Several of Teresa's friends agreed to portray characters from her book. I was a French chef preparing "stimulating and restoring beverages." Read aphrodisiacs. Here is the recipe for the Liquor of Love, or 'Pousse l'Amour:'
Prepare in a Madeira glass: a quarter of Maraschino; add the yellow of an egg; a quarter glass of Madeira and of cream of Cocoa; a quarter Madeira glass of Brandy. Serve without mixing, take care to leave the egg yolk whole.
Sounds yummy.
Here's the other one I read: Aphrodisiaque Abbyssin. Prepare in a glass: two lumps of sugar; four drops of Curacao; one Madeira glass of red port wine. Fill the glass with water and let warm almost to a boil. Serve with a slice of lemon larded with four cloves and a little nutmeg.
I think I may try serving these at my next dinner party, just to see what happens.
