Last night I saw Michel Gondry's newest film, a documentary about one of his (presumably favorite) aunts, "L'Epine dans le coeur" (A Thorn in the Heart). Quite different from "The Science of Sleep" or "Be Kind, Rewind," this is a film about a very lively and avant garde woman who was also a teacher to many people in the area of Cevennes in France. It's also a story about family and the difficulty between a mother (the aunt) and her son. I was surprised by how touching and funny this documentary was and by how Gondry managed to insert a touch of visual magic and playfulness into such a bittersweet documentary.
The film was playing as part of the 15th annual Rendez-vous with French Cinema at the Film Society of the Lincoln Center. After the documentary there was a conversation between Gondry and one of the directors of the Center. There were awesome clips shown of Gondry's various commercials as well as music videos for Bjork and a recent one for Mia Doi Todd that I loved (you can see them at partizan.com). The conversation was great, I left a little early though to go home and watch 24.
At the end of the month there will be the New Directors, New Films Festival at the Lincoln Center with a ton of films that look just as interesting as "L'Epine dans le Coeur." http://www.newdirectors.org/2010/
